چکیده

Ice volume estimates are crucial for assessing water reserves stored in glaciers. Due to its large glacier coverage, such estimates are of particular interest for the Himalayan–Karakoram (HK) region. In this study, different existing methodologies are used to estimate the ice reserves: three area–volume relations, one slope-dependent volume estimation method, and two ice-thickness distribution models are applied to a recent, detailed, and complete glacier inventory of the HK region, spanning over the period 2000–2010 and revealing an ice coverage of 40 775 km. An uncertainty and sensitivity assessment is performed to investigate the influence of the observed glacier area and important model parameters on the resulting total ice volume. Results of the two ice-thickness distribution models are validated with local icethickness measurements at six glaciers. The resulting ice volumes for the entire HK region range from 2955 to 4737 km, depending on the approach. This range is lower than most previous estimates. Results from the ice thickness distribution models and the slope-dependent thickness estimations agree well with measured local ice thicknesses. However, total volume estimates from area-related relations are larger than those from other approaches. The study provides evidence on the significant effect of the selected method on results and underlines the importance of a careful and critical evaluation.

The state and fate of Himalayan glaciers.

Himalayan glaciers are a focus of public and scientific debate. Prevailing uncertainties are of major concern because some projections of their future have serious implications for water resources. Most Himalayan glaciers are losing mass at rates similar to glaciers elsewhere, except for emerging indications of stability or mass gain in the Karakoram. A poor understanding of the processes affec...

Slight mass gain of Karakoram glaciers in the early twenty-first century

Assessments of the state of health of Hindu-Kush–Karakoram– Himalaya glaciers and their contribution to regional hydrology and global sea-level rise suffer from a severe lack of observations1. The globally averaged mass balance of glaciers and ice caps is negative1–3. An anomalous gain of mass has been suggested for the Karakoram glaciers2,4–6, but was not confirmed by recent estimates of mass ...

Widespread Albedo Decreasing and Induced Melting of Himalayan Snow and Ice in the Early 21st Century

BACKGROUND The widely distributed glaciers in the greater Himalayan region have generally experienced rapid shrinkage since the 1850s. As invaluable sources of water and because of their scarcity, these glaciers are extremely important. Beginning in the twenty-first century, new methods have been applied to measure the mass budget of these glaciers. Investigations have shown that the albedo is ...

Seasonal changes in surface albedo of Himalayan glaciers from MODIS data and links with the annual mass balance

Few glaciological field data are available on glaciers in the Hindu Kush–Karakoram–Himalayan (HKH) region, and remote sensing data are thus critical for glacier studies in this region. The main objectives of this study are to document, using satellite images, the seasonal changes of surface albedo for two Himalayan glaciers, Chhota Shigri Glacier (Himachal Pradesh, India) and Mera Glacier (Ever...

Himalayan glacial sedimentary environments: a framework for reconstructing and dating the former extent of glaciers in high mountains

Reconstructing paleoenvironmental change from glacial geologic evidence in the Himalayas has been difficult because of the lack of organic material for radiocarbon dating and the problems of correctly identifying the origin of highly dissected landforms. Studies of the contemporary glacial depositional environments, and ancient landforms and sediments in the Hunza valley (Karakoram Mountains), ...
